What is a Developmental Disability?

·        A disability that is manifested before the person reaches 22 years of age.

·        A disability that affects one's physical and/or cognitive abilities.

·        A disability that affects one throughout their entire life.

 


To have a developmental disability, a person must be limited in 3 or more of the following areas:

 

·        Capacity for independent living

·        Economic self-sufficiency

·        Learning

·        Mobility

·        Receptive and expressive language

·        Self-care

·        Self-direction

·        Social

 

 


Examples of Developmental Disabilities:
·        Autism: A developmental disability that affects a person’s ability to communicate and interact with others.
·        Cerebral Palsy: A developmental disability that occurs in the first few years of life and affects a person’s ability to coordinate body movements.
·        Spina  Bifida: The skin does not cover the spinal cord and affects growth and is noted at birth.
