What is a Developmental Disability?

·        A disability that is manifested before the person reaches 22 years of age.

·        A disability that affects one's physical and/or cognitive abilities.

·        A disability that affects one throughout their entire life.

 



To have a developmental disability, a person must be limited in 3 or more of the following areas:

     *
Capacity for independent living
      *Economic self-sufficiency
      *Learning
      *Mobility
      *
Receptive and expressive language
      *Self-care
      *Self-direction
      *Social

 


 
Examples of Developmental Disabilities:     
 
*Autism: A developmental disability that affects a person’s ability to communicate and interact with others.
 *Cerebral Palsy: A developmental disability that occurs in the first few years of life and affects a person’s ability to coordinate body movements.
 *Spina Bifida: The skin does not cover the spinal cord and affects growth and is noted at birth.
