Providing advocacy and education for people with developmental disabilities

Mission:
Promoting inclusion, independence and self-determination through advocacy
and education for people with developmental disabilities.

  • In its early years, The Arc was instrumental in establishing a law in the state of North Dakota mandating special education and training for people with intellectual disabilities.
  • In the 1980's, The Arc made its most noteworthy contribution to date when it joined the state Arc of North Dakota in a lawsuit which dramatically impacted residential services provided for people with intellectual disabilities, from institutional care to community based care.
  • In the late 1990's, The Arc spearheaded a movement to seek a Human Rights Commission in North Dakota.  The group went on to obtain its own non-profit status and still operates today as the North Dakota Human Rights Coalition.
  • In 2003, The Arc challenged Governor Hoeven and state legislators to spend part of a day with a simulated disability or financial limitation.  The Governor accepted the Disability Challenge and spend the morning using a wheelchair.  Nearly 30 state legislators also accepted the challenge and spent their day with simulations of vision loss, hearing loss, dyslexia or limited mobility, to name just a few.
