United Voices is a group of people with disabilities who have common goals. These individuals learn how to advocate for their rights through the self-advocacy movement. Self-advocacy is simply defined as speaking for oneself, solving problems and making decisions. Self-advocates also learn about their rights and responsibilities and how to be actively involved in the community.

|
|
While United Voices members (self-advocates) are all leaders in the community, they vote for an executive board every two years. The board guides the group and runs the monthly meetings.
|
Examples of Self-Advocacy Include:
-
Speaking for yourself.
-
Knowing and defending your rights.
-
Taking responsibility for your actions.
-
Resolving personal discrimination.
-
Solving problems and making decisions.
-
Asking for help because you want and need it.
-
Contributing to the community.
-
Challenging people to see the person first; the disability second.
